An Almost Finished Blanket

So this is Halle's new and almost finished blanket. It was my goal to finish it tonight and I tried- really tried- but alas, it was not to be. The problem really wasn't finishing because it is all sewn up but the final seam is crooked. Not crooked like not perfect- crooked like over the river and through the woods crooked. And since this is visible it's just not going to work. I need to have a much more skilled seamstress than I finish it. I'm really bummed though because I worked so hard on it. Then I need a pattern for the bedskirt, I have one in mind but I haven't even looked for one yet. I really want to finish it all soon- like tomorrow but I don't think that's going to happen.

So, in other news, we have a new resident at the Button casa. As you can see a pigeon has taken up residence in my window box on the patio. Actually, it's two pigeons, a mom and dad to be. Monday evening Travis, the girls and myself were out running errands and Amanda called me frantically saying that she'd run a bird off (we had been running them off since I saw one take a part of one of my plants) and it had layed an egg. She was so upset thinking that the baby bird would die. We didn't see the bird come back that night but the next morning there she was sitting on her new nest. I did some research and found out that we should be expecting another egg that day or the next and sure enough I looked on Wednesday and there were two eggs. I know I should say Oh we get to experience the wonder of life, blah, blah, blah and I think I'm there now but originally I wasn't. Really, she's hogging up the whole patio. And in the grand scheme of apartment life that's like taking up your entire back yard. The girls play out there all the time and now they can't. I checked it out and by the time they hatch are weaned and fly off it will take about two months. But everybody else is excited about our new "guests" and so I figured I should join in. It's a great lesson for Chloe and could be one of the first things she remembers when she's grown up. So, yay mommy and daddy pigeon, I'm sure there are far worse places to build a nest.

Posted by Picasa So this is an upclose (and blurry) picture of our very first flower. It was still a bud at the time but has now bloomed into a very small pink and white star shaped flower (phlox). I have worked so hard on these flowers for quite some time (I even divided these without killing them) and the day I saw this bloom is the day the pigeons moved in. I figure that by the time the birds are gone my flowers will be destroyed but I'm just going to go with it. After all, they're flowers right?
And all of that pigeon poo might be good for them. I suppose that will be my silver lining.

I continue to be amazed at your domestic transformation...like God just flipped a switch in you. Seriously, I think He gave you a joy for the season of being at home that you are in right now, rather than looking off into the distance and longing for an opportunity in ministry or a great career. He has made you to be a great wife and mother, and you seem really happy in that spot right now. I'm thrilled for you.

Awww, thanks. It has been somewhat of a difficult transformation for me BUT I am getting to do some things that I've wanted to do for quite some time and just haven't had the time. I've always thought about gardening, sewing and painting and now I can. I couldn't find a suitable bedding set for Halle so I'm making it. I love the pattern, I just wish the fabric was better quality. But that's what you get for $2 a yard- it's affordable and what a novice needs. Seriously, I can't even sew a straight line.

And as far as ministry- I'm going to minister wherever I am. There are definite upsides to not being on paid staff. There are way less headaches and people usually like you more. I've heard it time and time again "bloom where you are planted" and that's what I'm doing. We may be in full time ministry some day but I'm just going to enjoy this time with my girls. For heavens sake- Amanda will be graduating in TWO YEARS!!! I don't have much time left to influence who she's going to be.

I totally agree with Tisra...and...well you too Amy, everytime I read a post like this I feel your excitement and joy in where you are. It always surprises me and makes me happy. Must be that whole "abundant life" thing.

So, are you done with the quilting idea or is that still something you want to do on the blanket?

Oh no, I still want to quilt it. I think that doing anything else wouldn't look quite right. I ripped out the offending seam tonight and will probably just re-do it by hand. And then I plan to take you up on your quilting offer ;)

Amy, I think your grandmothers genes went to you and not me. She could always do everything you are doing. But, alas, I never could.

Sure you could, Mom. You used to sew and stuff. Bring something with you next time you come and we'll sew something :)

Hey! I like the polka dot and striped scheme!

HE is the vine and we are the branches and you are very fruitful in everything that you touch and that is an amazing accomplishment! What a wintess your life is to those around you when you dont even realize it! You are definately a beautiful flower blooming!

Thanks, Tracy, I needed that. You've known me the longest and know better than everyone else what a screw-up I can be. I definitely don't feel like a blooming flower.

I'm having a crappy couple of days...I'll be better soon.
