Amanda has her Driver(s) License as of this past Tuesday but we haven't let her actually drive by herself until just now. Yes, my 16 year old is on the road right this second- Trav and I just prayed. Anyway, the reason that we haven't let her drive is that she's not ready. As of Tuesday she couldn't even park straight. And she really hadn't been that motivated to do it correctly, I guess just figuring that she'd get it right AFTER she had her license. So, you're probably wondering how she got her license to begin with. Well, in the driving test she had to take a right onto a main road and then drive through a subdivision and back to the DMV- that's it. When I took my driver test you had to be able to do several things and among them was reading signs, a three point turn, and parallel parking. If you didn't pass the parallel parking part you failed the test. I know a lot of people said (then) that you don't have to parallel park often so you shouldn't have to do it but I think that by making you parallel park it shows that you know how to handle the vehicle you're driving. Anyway, Amanda has been working very hard and has gone out with Travis to practice so we felt that she was ready to make the short trip to Wal-Mart. Of course, I still have butterflies and am second guessing myself but I'm sure she'll do fine. I'm glad that it will be at least 11 more years until Chloe starts driving. Posted by Picasa

OK, so now you know how I felt when you and Jon started driving. From this point on you will not have finger nails, and will have a nice little road in the carpet waiting for her to get home. On the other hand she has a very good head on and is a very responsible 16 year old. I'm very proud of her.

Wow...the Tennessee requirements for driving are even worse than I thought. No wonder there are so many idiots on the road. Thank you for taking the time to teach her more than a drive through a subdivision.

I'm sure she will do just fine. I'm impressed with your confidence and I am in no hurry to be in your shoes. I feel a little hollow place in my heart knowing Amanda is out there and she's not even mine.

Well, (everybody)we are going to take it slowly and only let Amanda do what we feel she's ready for, even when she gets upset about it.

No Kris, that's not her drivers license photo- it's a self portrait. I think it should be her drivers license photo though.

That perfectly explains why we have so many idiots on the road. Seriously! What kind of test is that?! I know California isn't the best- but they are more strict than here and I think that is a good thing. We had to take driver's education classes to get our licence if we wanted it before 18, and the actual DMV test required a written portion and a driving portion. The driving portion required us to park correctly (both parallel and normal front-loading space), we also had to properly merge onto the freeway and drive for a bit, and drive surface streets.

Amanda is a smart girl, and I think she'll do well after a bit more practice. But, please, call me an let me know when she's on the road so I can stay home. :-)

Go girl! I'm still laughing.....Alyssa has to take a drug and alcohol course and a road sign test BEFORE they'll even let her apply and then she has to wait one year before she can get her learner's permit. I'm in no hurry.....

I think TN could take lessons from FL. Really the standard up here is pathetic.
